Suturing severed peripheral nerves requires supreme precision.
The medical device Nerve Tape® offers a sim-ple suture-free solution.
Iatrogenic nerve injuries are a risk in all orthopaedic fields. The standard treatment is to manually suture up the outer connective tissue of the nerve – a complex process that requires utmost precision. A faster and easier method for precise and reliable repair of injured nerves is offered by “Nerve Tape®” by BioCirquit Technologies.
The medical device consists of extracellular matrix derived from porcine small intestine, into which microhooks are embedded. The tape is simply wrapped around the outer connective tissue surrounding the severed nerve endings. There, the microhooks engage the tissue and ensure a reliable connection between the individual ends.
Nerve Tape® was developed in collaboration with the Orthopedic Microsurgery Laboratory at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, USA. The patented product design is the first FDA-approved suture-free solution for the surgical repair of transected nerves, and its market launch is planned for 2023.
